Photographies de Ogawa Kazumasa

Edited by Stacy Miyagawa
Text by Dinah Berland

Ogawa Kazumasa (1860–1929) was a pioneer of Japanese photography and leading publisher of photographs during the Meiji era, issuing a large number of illustrated books depicting traditional Japanese views specifically for the Western market. This book appeared in 1896 and an original copy exists in the J. Paul Getty Museum. It contains delicate pictures of indigenous Japanese flowers (especially lotuses, several varieties of chrysanthemums and lilies, and some volubilis) taken by Ogawa himself and printed using the so-called phototype process, the final prints being hand-coloured. The present edition reproduces the thirty-eight plates of the original work.

Ogawa Kazumasa was a pioneer in the field of photography, photographic printing, and publishing in Japan during the Meiji period.
