Con la luce di Roma. In Rome's Light

Fotografie dal 1840 al 1870 nella collezione Marco Antonetto. Photographs from 1840 to 1870 from the Marco Antonetto Collection

Edited by Gianna Mina

The exhibition presented at the Museo Vincenzo Vela focuses on the earliest days of photography, taking as its starting point the splendid set of nineteenth-century photographs in the Marco Antonetto Collection, which blend harmoniously into the context of Villa Vela’s photographic collection. The exhibition sets itself the aim of illustrating the different manners in which Rome was viewed by those whose interest in the city was prompted by such motivations as scientific research, artistic passion or study, professional and commercial demands, or simply personal pleasure and curiosity.

The selection displayed allows viewers to know and learn about the nature and specificity of the earliest aspects of photography in Rome, from the first experiments with daguerreotypes and paper negatives, to the birth of professional photographic studios and the creation of the most popular and successful sets of images on the international market. The common denominator of all the different facets of the exhibition is the production of “vedute”, the views of the city that would become the most distinctive characteristic of photography in Rome in the decades that followed.
