Les estampes de Paul Klee

Edited by James Thrall Soby
Postface by Christopher Cherix

5 Continents Editions, in collaboration with MoMA, New York, the first French-language edition of The Prints of Paul Klee.

This is a new edition faithfully reproducing in both form and content the original, published by MoMA in 1947, and includes forty major prints by Paul Klee (1879–1940), accompanied by an essay by James Thrall Soby (1906–1979). An introduction by Christopher Cherix updates this work, which has been designed as an elegant portfolio published as a limited edition and comprising a series of individual plates of Klee’s work. This project is a model of its kind in view of the superb quality of the forty reproductions of prints from the MoMA collection, one of the most important in the world. The Prints of Paul Klee enables the reader to explore one of the less well-known aspects of the œuvre of one of the leading figures in 20th-century art and to reacquaint oneself with the range of his work.

The Prints of Paul Klee is the first of the MoMA Classics series and is co-published with 5 Continents Editions, giving French readers the opportunity to discover historic MoMA books, such as Looking at Photographs, by John Szarkowski, Machine Art, by Philip Johnson, or Three Young Rats, by Alexander Calder, which have never previously appeared in French.

James Thrall Soby was a well-known author, critic, and collector. He has also been Director of the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in NewYork.
Christopher Cherix is head curator of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA.
