Previously unpublished pieces revealing a crucial component in European culture.

Although the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva did hold a few Oriental, early Christian, and Byzantine objects when it was founded in 1910, these collections really burgeoned in 1970. During that decade, the museum acquired some splendid sets of liturgical and household silverware, bronzes, mosaics, and jewellery, as well as everyday objects. Other fine works were added later to complete collections that were representative of an essential component in European culture.

Even though some pieces were displayed in exhibitions dedicated to Byzantium over the past few years, most were only familiar to those who visited the museum. They needed to be brought to the attention of a broader public. This is the purpose of this beautiful book, which follows an earlier volume published by 5 Continents Editions devoted to the icons in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva.

Marielle Martiniani-Reber is an art historian specializing in Byzantine textiles and is head curator of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine collections in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva.
