L'artiste collectionneur de dessin - II

De Giorgio Vasari à aujourd'hui

Catherine Monbeig Goguel
Introduction by Pierre Rosenberg

“A cartoon in the Ancient manner, a copy of a famous work or a sketch for a painting . . . drawings include works as varied as they are interesting.” MatinPlus

With an introduction by Pierre Rosenberg and edited by Catherine Monbeig Goguel, this book consists of the proceedings of the second international congress on ancient drawings, to which have been added two studies to complete a general survey covering England, The Netherlands, Italy, and France from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.

Martin Royalton Kisch, Giulio Bora, and Stefania Mason consider the long-term activity of artists working in London, Milan, and Venice, from Peter Lely to the members of the Bassano family and Ambrogio Figino. Key figures in the seventeenth century, such as Jacob de Witt and Jacques Stella, are assessed by Michiel Plomp and Olivier Bonfait. The book then focuses on four collectors active between 1800 and 1900, who were benefactors of museums in Wurzburg, Cambridge, and Florence: Martin von Wagner, a contemporary of Wicar, Charles Ricketts, and Charles Shannon, followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and Daniel Horne, a friend of Bernard Berenson. In the opening contribution, Catherine Monbeig Goguel draws her conclusions from the two symposia, discussing the transmission of studio collections, gifts, and exchanges between artists, collections created for teaching purposes, and the emergence in society of the artist as collector.

Catherine Monbeig Goguel is Emeritus Research Director at the Louvre, CNRS, and the author of 17th–18th Century Tuscan Drawings – vol. II 1620–1800, published by 5 Continents Editions, for which she was awarded the Eugène Carrière Prize.
Pierre Rosenberg, of the Académie Française, is the former President-Director of the Musée du Louvre.
