Il mondo simbolico degli amuleti egizi

Philippe Germond

This book aims to take the reader on a journey into the symbolic universe of ancient Egypt, as revealed through its amulets, which testify to the originality and richness of the civilisation of the pharaohs. Although often tiny, these objects nonetheless evoke the most varied aspects of life: the daily concerns of the Nile peasant having to deal with an environment still haphazardly under control, the multifaceted array of gods and sacred animals, the nuanced features of royalty...

It takes its cue from the approach pioneered by Jacques-Édouard Berger, responsive as he was to an object’s “discourse,” and the reader is treated to a passionate investigation of the meaning of the concept of “neter,” universal and divine harmony, through objects imbued with “nefer,” profound and all-embracing beauty.

Most of the amulets presented in the book are on display in the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts (mudac) in Lausanne, where the Jacques-Édouard Berger Collection is in long-term deposit.
