Dubuffet & Art Brut

Im Rausch der Kunst

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) is the most significant French artist of the second half of the 20th century. Throughout his life he was a rebel who opposed traditional art and searched for new forms of expression. Correspondingly, his extensive creative work was extremely versatile: the former wine merchant was a painter and sculptor as well as an art philosopher and a passionate Art Brut collector and theorist.

In his search for original creativity, Dubuffet, like other artists of his time, discovered drawings made by children as well as art created by social outsiders. He was fascinated by their pure and intuitive approach and their unusual inventive power bringing about very diverse forms of expression.

Artistic autodidacts create works out of a deep emotional desire and according to their own criteria as regards aestheticism and content. Usually this occurs remote from the established art system and without any art education or experience of it. Often, such autodidacts work in imposed or self-inflicted isolation and create their own world. They are, for instance, people who have been in psychiatric units or have had experience with spiritism, or prisoners as well as loners, outsiders and outcasts: the Swiss Aloïse (1886-1964), for example, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern (1892-1982), Henry Darger (1892-1973), the German Josef Wittlich (1903-1982.

For this kind of creation, Dubuffet coined the term Art Brut: a “raw”, inventive and dissident form of art. He created a new aesthetic category, which has been of particular significance for Modern Art until the present day. Since 1945, Dubuffet tirelessly led investigations on those works created in seclusion. He founded an association, the Compagnie de l’Art Brut, which organised exhibitions and published some monographs, in order to present unknown artists from different countries and their works. Furthermore, Dubuffet collected works of Art Brut, which since 1976 have permanently been on show at a museum established especially for this purpose - the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne in Switzerland.

For the first time, museum kunst palast presents a major show in which about 100 works by Jean Dubuffet are presented alongside with a great number of works of Art Brut by the 50 most significant Art Brut artists offer an impressive insight into the wide range of artistic creation: paintings, drawings, assemblages, sculptures, architectural models as well as films of artistic environments.
